Correspondence, diaries, a photograph and other family papers relating to the Janney family's work among the Indians. 26 letters from Cosmelia Janney document her years at the Santee Agency, the Winnebago Agency and the Pawnee Agency. Most of the letters are addressed to her sister and brother-in-law, Lydia and William Brown, in Loudoun County. Several of the letters are written to the Brown family's children (Cosmelia, Thomas and Samuel Brown), and a single letter is written to Lydia Janney, Cosmelia's mother. There are also 2 letters from William Brown to Cosmelia Janney during her Pawnee teaching stint. Cosmelia Janney's diary, with entries in 1874 and 1877, also describes her life and work among the Pawnee. Collection includes 2 letters from Asa Moore Janney to the Browns, describing work at the Winnebago Industrial School; 3 letters from Ellen Janney Smith to the Browns about family affairs and life on the Winnebago reservation; a journal from 1871, possibly recording finances for a farm in Loudoun County; a manuscript genealogy; and an undated stereograph of the "Council of the Winnebagoes and the Omahas."
